BENGALURU: At least seven people died while eight were injured, seven seriously, in accidents in different parts of the state on New Year’s Day. In one of the accidents, several bus passengers had a lucky escape.

Four people died in two accidents in Ramanagara district on Wednesday. Two men hailing from Bengaluru died after the Toyota Innova MUV they were travelling in overturned at a curve near Talekere Handpost in Magadi taluk in the wee hours on Wednesday. The deceased were identified as Manju (31) and Kiran (30).

The two were part of a group of eight who had gone to Talekere Handpost for a drive on New Year’s Day and had tea. The accident occurred while they were returning when the driver lost control. The other six were seriously injured. The Magadi police visited the spot and have registered a case.

Two people died when their Maruti Swift car collided with a parked truck in front of the bus stand at Sathanur in Kanakapura taluk on Wednesday. The deceased are Niranjan (41) and Vishwanath (43).

They were part of a group of four friends who had gone to a resort for the New Year’s party and were returning to Bengaluru when the accident occurred. The two others, who sustained injuries, were shifted to a private hospital in Bengaluru. The Sathanur police visited the spot and registered a case.

The bus was perched precariously on the parapet wall.

Passengers of a KSRTC bus had a lucky escape after the brakes failed at a curve near Sangam. The driver managed to bring the bus to a halt by crashing into a parapet wall. There were about 70 passengers in the bus heading from Kanakapura to Sangama and a slight misfortune would have sent the bus hurtling down a valley. The Sathanur police visited the spot.

A 19-year-old youth died and his pillion rider suffered serious injuries after their scooter collided with a SUV near Nutan College in Davanagere in the wee hours on Wednesday. The two youths were out riding the motorcycle as part of New Year revelry when the accident occurred.

The deceased was identified as Karthik, a resident of Nittuvalli New Extension. The pillion rider had posted a video on Instagram moments before the accident where the SUV can be seen coming from the opposite direction. The impact was such that the motorcycle broke into two pieces.

Rohan was working as a jeep driver in the Forest Department.

A two-wheeler rider died after crashing into a barbed wire fence near Ganada Hole in Sakleshpur taluk of Hassan district while returning home of partying. The deceased was identified as Rohan (25), who was working as the jeep driver of the assistant conservator of forests. The Sakleshpur Rural police visited the spot and registered a case.

A youth, who pelted stones at a Volvo SUV and fled on his scooter, died after the two vehicles collided after going over a speedbreaker at high speed near Siddaiah Road Circle in Shivamogga. The SUV had overturned due to the accident and one person sustained injuries.

The deceased was identified as Dhanush (20) while the injured pillion rider Prajwal was admitted to McGann Hospital. Two girls who were in the SUV escaped with minor bruises. Locals took the car driver to task for chasing the scooter rider and driving recklessly. The Doddapete police have registered a case.
