BENGALURU: The Congress government in Karnataka is facing questions about its guarantee schemes, with some party MLAs suggesting that the benefits should be limited to those who truly need them. The schemes, which were a key part of the party’s election manifesto, have been criticised for being too broad and benefitting even those who don’t require assistance.

Some MLAs are advocating for a ‘give it up’ policy, where those who don’t need assistance can opt out of the schemes. The idea is to ensure that the benefits of the schemes reach those who truly need them.

The Supreme Court’s recent comments on states distributing freebies have added to the debate, with some wondering if the state government will review its guaranteed schemes. The schemes, which include free electricity, bus travel, and other benefits, are estimated to cost the state around Rs 55,000-60,000 crore annually.
