The Taliban have announced that schools and universities will re-open for boys and girls from March 2022.

The minister of Information and Culture and the spokesperson of The Islamic Emirates, Jabiullah Mujahid, have said that the Taliban are not against education. Still, boys and girls are to be separated when learning.

The ministry of higher education has strived to open universities and schools for the last two months. However, they have also said that high schools are open and closed due to financial problems.

Boys and girls will be separated during studies to facilitate that more women’s hostels are being built around Afghanistan. One hundred fifty public universities have been closed around Afghanistan, and students are studying in the 40 private universities. The ministry has mentioned that girls can attend school up to sixth grade in public schools.

The Taliban captured Afghanistan in August 2021, and in many areas, girls were not allowed to attend school post the seventh standard. Girl’s schools too were closed forcibly, which drew massive backlash from the international community.
