BENGALURU: A video of a man giving commentary of a gully cricket match, which was posted on Twitter, has since gone viral. Netizens have applauded the man for the fluent commentary in Sanskrit and promoting the language and culture of India.
The Twitter post also caught the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who retweeted the video with a comment saying, “This is heartening to see. Congrats to those undertaking this effort. During one of the #Mann ki Baat programmes last year I had shared a similar effort in Kashi. Sharing that as well”, he wrote.
A Sanskrit scholar, Lakshmi Narayana, had shared a video of some boys playing cricket at the Samskrita Bharathi premises at Girinagar, even as he can be heard giving commentary and conversing with the “audience”. At the Samskrita Bharathi, Sanskrit language is used for communication. Lakshmi Narayana tweeted the video with the caption ‘Sanskrit and cricket.’ Some of the country’s most famous cricketers have praised the Sanskrit commentary.
PM Modi retweets the viral video and applauds the effort.”We play cricket every day and also speak Sanskrit. PM Modi retweeted our video, and more than 3 lakh Twitter users have viewed our video. Sanskrit language should reach all over the world,” said Vidwath Sena, a Sanskrit student.
“Sanskrit language is in our blood. If we practise daily for around two hours, we can learn the language. Samskrita Bharathi has attempted to teach Sanskrit language in 49 countries. Indians are making an attempt to learn the language only now. Our mother tongue is Kannada, but we have learnt Sanskrit through different mediums. This Sanskrit commentary is an effort to reach the people and give knowledge about the language. In international cricket, Sanskrit should be given a chance so that it becomes the centre of attraction and people will definitely develop an interest in learning the language,” said Lakshmi Narayana, the Sanskrit scholar.
