BENGALURU: Less than a week remains for the September 15 deadline to fit high security registration plates (HSRP) on vehicles older than 2019. If not, vehicle owners will have to pay Rs 500 fine from next week.
The government and the high court had set a deadline for installing the HSRP number plate, which has been extended several times. But, vehicle users are not shown much interest. Hence, the state’s vehicle owners have been warned and a special drive will be conducted by the RTO and traffic police from next Monday.
Mallikarjun, Additional Transport Commissioner, said, “Less than one week is left for the deadline to fit HSRP. Out of the total two crore vehicles in the state older than 2019, only 51 lakh vehicles have installed the HSRP number plates so far. The remaining 1.49 crore vehicles have not installed it yet. The Transport department is planning to conduct a special drive from September 16 in all districts and impose a fine of Rs 500. The first-time fine will be Rs 500, and the second-time fine will be Rs 1,000”, he said.
The central government introduced HSRP to have a uniform number plate system across the country and to get information about criminal activities through high-security registration plates. “People are still waiting and trying to book it online at the last minute. Now, just a week’s time is left, and after that, we will impose a fine. Additionally, the traffic police will also impose a fine”, Mallikarjun added.
