BENGALURU: Infosys Foundation chairperson and Rajya Sabha member Dr Sudha Murty has revealed that she was targeted in a cyber fraud  attempt. Sudha Murthy herself revealed this in a video and has appealed to people to file complaints against cyber fraudsters .

She said she received a call on September 5, Onam day, from someone claiming to be from the Department of Telecommunications. “Earlier, the department had contacted me for some other reason. So I thought that he might have called again”, she says in the video.

“The man asked ‘Is this your number, madam?’ Then, he said that obscene videos were being shared from my number. He said that he would deactivate the mobile number in 2 hours”, she said.

Dr Murthy was surprised as she didn’t have any such videos, and she questioned why her number would be blocked. The caller then asked if her mobile number was linked to her Aadhaar number in January.

Dr Murthy’s assistant intervened and asked her to cut the call. At this time, the person who called said that he was a PRO from the Department of Telecommunications. Upon investigation, Dr Murthy discovered that it was a cyber fraud attempt, with scammers impersonating officials to deceive people.

She advised people to be cautious of unknown calls, especially those related to bank accounts, Aadhaar cards or arrest warrants. “If suspicious calls are received, people should immediately call 1930 and contact the police to protect people’s money”, she advised.
