BENGALURU: Private unaided schools in Karnataka are set to hike fees by 5-10 per cent for the 2026-27 academic year, citing increased expenses like electricity, water and staff salaries.

The private schools’ association has left it to individual schools to decide the exact hike amount, but advised them not to exceed 10 per cent. This is a common practice, with schools typically hiking fees by 5-10 per cent annually.

The decision comes amid rising operational costs, including teacher and staff salaries. Schools have been instructed to make the fee hike decision carefully, considering the financial burden on parents.

“Private unaided schools hike fees annually, as per their needs, by 5-10 per cent. There are many unregistered schools cropping up and the number of students is also dropping. There are BWSSB charges, electricity which are rising. We appeal to the schools to keep the hike below 10 per cent”, said D Shashi Kumar, general secretary of the Associated Managements of Primary & Secondary Schools in Karnataka (KAMS)

“Unaided schools usually raise fees annually due to financial implications. It is false that KAMS has announced a 15 per cent raise. It is left to the individual educational institutions and some may not even raise the fees”, Shashi Kumar added.
