BENGALURU: The price of tomatoes has suddenly increased in Bengaluru, shooting up to Rs 80-90 per kg at Hopcoms outlets and other markets, compared to Rs 20-25 per kg last week. The sudden spike is attributed to unseasonal rains, reduced yield, and disease affecting the crop.

The supply of tomatoes to Bengaluru has decreased, with the city relying on imports from surrounding districts like Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur and Ramanagara, as well as Nasik. Traders say the reduced supply has led to the price hike.

Traders predict that prices may decrease gradually in the coming days. The main reasons for the price increase are inadequate supply to meet demand, unseasonal rains affecting the crop, reduced yield due to disease and lack of storage facilities, they said.
