BENGALURU: The Poor House maternity hospital on Narayan Pillai Road in Shivajinagar, built in 1957 to serve the underprivileged, has been shut down for three years for renovation. The government hospital was famous for providing essential healthcare services to the poor.

The building was left locked for repairing, clearing of weeds and shrubs three years ago. Despite repeated requests from locals, construction of the new building, undertaken by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), remains incomplete.

The hospital was very convenient for the people of this area. As it was an old hospital, a new building is being constructed under the ‘Brand Bengaluru’. The maternity hospital was closed in the name of repairs, but the construction work of the new building has not been completed even after three years.

Residents are suffering without access to basic healthcare services. The All India Women’s Cultural Organisation and BBMP had written to the Health Department Special Commissioner to speed up work on completion of the hospital building.
