BENGALURU: The city police are introducing new measures to curb crime, after the recent surge in violent attacks, reckless driving with display of lethal weapons, and nighttime theft, ransom and robbery. Despite efforts to control crime, inadequate staff and crime control measures have hindered progress.
To address this, the police department has devised a three-stage night patrol plan. This initiative has already been tested with trained officers assigned to night duty. The goal is to enhance security and prevent criminal activities under the cover of darkness.
Police are planning to impose blockades (nakabandi) at differnt points across the city in the coming days regular (MOB) offenders will be in the sights of the police. Police Sub-Inspectors of the respective stations have been told to appoint a sub-inspector in charge of the night shift. If there are less PSIs in any station, a PSI from another station will be deputed on night duty.
Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B Dayananda said the department is trying to make police night beat even more effective. The department is also implementing an e-beat system to reduce criminal activities and training is ongoing. “The station in charge or any senior officers will themselves go out for night rounds and their movements will be tracked through GPS at the police control room. The department is looking to use more technology to bring more efficiency in the system. We will plan to increase checkpoints and we caught many regular offenders. Based on the experience and feedback, we will put all effort into strengthening policing”, he said.
