RAMANAGARA: After the spate of accidents on the Bengaluru-Mysuru 10-lane expressway, which has so far claimed more than 100 ever, the police have now begun imposing fines on cars exceeding the speed limit.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP)-Traffic and Road Safety, Alok Kumar, inspected the highway on two occasions recently in Ramanagara and Mandya districts. He also suggested several measures to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to curb accidents.
Ramanagara SP Karthik Reddy said they have deployed five speed radar guns and those breaching the 100 kmph speed limit will be fined Rs 1,000 on the first instance and the driver’s licence will be cancelled for repeat offences. Also, the police will watch out for lane discipline among drivers and checks will be conducted for drunk driving.
On Wednesday, district Deputy Commissioner Avinash Menon Rajendran, Superintendent of Police Karthik Reddy and NHAI officials inspected the expressway.
Speaking to media persons, he said, “The SP has identified accident-prone spots, where skywalks are needed. Yesterday, a road safety meeting was held under the chairmanship of the chief secretary wherein NHAI officials were also present. Following the meeting, we are conducting the inspection. Flyovers and skywalks have been suggested at three locations and an underpass at one location. We have also given other suggestions including road signages, etc”.
The DC said instructions had been given earlier to ensure rain water does not stagnate on the service roads or the main carriageway and drains have been constructed for the purpose. Speed breakers have been installed on the service road at entry and exit points, he added.
