BENGALURU: Two weeks after the city police installed safety islands at select locations across the city, police commissioner B Dayananda on Thursday posted on Twitter asking if the SOS kiosks can be named as ‘Aapatbhaandava’.
Netizens responded with various suggestions with some even agreeing with the police chief on the name. Some others pointed out that Bengaluru being a metropolitan city, a more easily comprehensible name would be ideal. There were also suggestions to keep the name even simpler. Some of the suggestions included, ‘Kavach’, ‘Rakshak’ and ‘Sahaya’, ‘Surakshaka’, ‘Neravu’ among others.

In the first phase, the city police, in association with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), installed the SOS kiosks/safety islands for the safety of women at 30 locations and plan to add 20 more in vulnerable locations. The project has been taken up under the Nirbhaya fund of the central government.
The safety island has a booth which has a panic button and a speaker and pressing the button will put the user in touch with the police control room or a nearby command centre within 10 seconds. A nearby police station or patrol vehicle is then alerted to rescue the woman in distress. The booths also have a CCTV camera an siren.
