BENGALURU: The Peenya Flyover on the national highway between Bengaluru and Tumkur, which was closed for heavy vehicles, is now open to all categories off vehicles from today.

The Peenya flyover is the gateway to Bengaluru city. In 2021, a defect was found in the flyover and heavy vehicle movement was banned for almost two-and-a-half years. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has now permitted movement of all types of vehicles except on Fridays as some repair work on the flyover is not yet completed.

Movement of heavy vehicles is banned every Friday from 6 am to Saturday 6 am. On other days, all types of vehicles can take the flyover. Heavy vehicles can only move on the left side of the flyover at a maximum speed limit of 40 kmph, as instructed by the NHAI.

This flyover connects Bengaluru to more than ten districts. Movement of heavy vehicles like buses and trucks on the 15-metre-wide and 4.2 km-long flyover on Tumkur road in the city had been restricted since December 2021 due to corrosion of pre-stressed cables.

The NHAI had closed the flyover for 60 hours in January to conduct load tests on 240 pre-stressed cables. In March, the NHAI began replacing 1,243 pre-stressed cables and now, with the repair work almost complete, the NHAI has given the green signal for movement of heavy vehicles.
