BENGALURU: Peenya flyover, one of the major traffic thoroughfares connecting 22 districts, will be closed again for three days. The traffic police will close the flyover tonight at the request of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for load testing.
The Peenya flyover has been closed to heavy vehicles for almost three years since 2021 due to some technical problems. This had led to a debate over the quality of construction and questioning the standards and workmanship. There was also talk that the entire flyover should be demolished. However, later on, repair was carried out and some cables were laid after which light motor vehicles were allowed to run while there is complete restriction on movementof heavy vehicles on the flyover.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M N Anucheth said the Peenya flyover will be closed from 11 pm tonight till 11 am on January 19. “The NHAI officials have completed the cable laying works and are going to conduct load tests with heavy vehicles to assess the capacity of the pre-stressed cables. If the technical experts gave the green signal after the load tests, then heavy vehicles can be allowed on the flyover. Therefore, on the request of the NHAI officials, the traffic police will close the flyover for three days”, he said.
In view of the closure of the flyover, the surface level road on NH 48 is expected to see more traffic for three days from tomorrow. Motorists are adivsed to take alternatives roads instead of getting stuck in traffic on the national highway.
