BENGALURU: Customs officials at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru have foiled a gold smuggling attempt and arrested a passenger who was carrying gold worth Rs 3.44 crore into the country. This comes close on the heels of the arrest of Kannada actress Ranya Rao, who was caught by officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) with 14 kg of gold.
The passenger, who arrived from Dubai, was caught hiding 3.995 kg of gold in his shirt. The gold was valued at Rs 3.44 crore. Customs officials intercepted the passenger during a routine check and found the gold hidden in his shirt. The passenger was taken into custody and is being questioned by the officials.
This is not the first time that customs officials at the Bengaluru airport have held a gold smuggler. In recent months, there have been several instances of gold smuggling attempts being foiled by Customs officials at the airport. The arrested man is blind and was used as a mule to smuggle gold into the country.
