One in 29 women develop breast cancer, say medical experts, advise caution

BENGALURU: With modernity, the lifestyle of city dwellers has also seen changes. With the number of people adopting Western lifestyle increasing, doctors are advising women to be careful about their health, especially about food and lifestyle choices.

Today, young women are going for new experiments as they want to remain slim and stay fit for short periods and are also changing their dietary habits. Studies have revealed that one in 29 women in urban areas develop breast cancer. The number of breast cancer patients has been increasing year after year in Karnataka, and has doubled in Bengaluru. Lakhs of breast cancer patients have been admitted to hospitals in the last year, medical experts pointed out.

What are the causes of breast cancer?

  • Increased alcohol consumption and smoking among women
  • Western culture, lifestyle and diet plan
  • Early menstruation and late menopause
  • Reproductive factors
  • Use of contraceptives
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Obesity, weight gain, and fat are all causes of breast cancer.

Dr Gayatri, a breast cancer specialist at a hospital chain in Bengaluru, said the number of breast cancer patients is increasing significantly in Bengaluru and even expert doctors are concerned about this. “The main reason for this is today’s lifestyle. Breast cancer can be cured if it is detected at an early stage, but if the patients get admitted late , it is difficult to save them”, she cautioned.

In recent years, the number of people suffering from breast cancer has increased significantly, and medical experts say women need to be more cautious about their dietary habits and lifestyle.
