Officials brainstorm, draw up new strategy to prevent traffic congestion in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: With the city’s notorious traffic congestion hogging the headlines every other day, several government officials held a meeting at the Vikasa Soudha on Thursday to brainstorm and draw up a new strategy to manage traffic.

The government officials were in a meeting to come up with a new strategy for traffic management.

The coordination committee meeting was chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Rajneesh Goyal. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) administrator Rakesh Singh, Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath and Joint Commissioner of Police (traffic) B R Ravikanthe Gowda held a discussion with representatives of Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) to come up with a new traffic management strategy.

Different department officials participated in the meeting.

Major junctions like Silk Board, Jayadeva Junction, Tin Factory, Hebbal, Goraguntepalya, K S Layout Junction, and Banashankari were identified as major traffic bottlenecks which see heavy traffic for about eight hours in a day.

The coordination committee meeting was held at Vikasa Soudha under the chairmanship of Rajneesh Goyal, Additional Chief Secretary, and BBMP administrator Rakesh Singh.

Some of the suggestions that came up after the meeting to ease traffic flow are:

No digging of roads or footpaths; if roads are dug up, BWSSB will be responsible for closing it.
Small shops and debris to be removed from the roadside on major roads.
Roadside trees causing huge traffic congestion will be cut down.
Pedestrian crossings to be marked at major intersections
Marking of parking zones to prevent traffic congestion.
