SIPAHIJALA (Tripura) : In an unexpected turn of events, a housewife from Barakhola village, under Jatrapur Police Station, Sunamura sub-division, allegedly left her husband and two young daughters owing to an obsession with social media. The incident left the local community in shock while raising larger concerns over the growing impact of social media addiction.
Manik Das, a rubber garden owner, married Pinki Debnath from Induria village nine years ago. The couple had been leading a seemingly happy life with their daughters, aged 4 and 6.
However, according to Manik, Pinki’s recent addiction to making social media reels and videos introduced an element of friction in their marriage. With over 14,000 followers, Pinki’s online presence grew rapidly, consuming much of her time and attention.
“She was always busy making reels instead of looking after the children and household work. I had to intervene and stop it as it was becoming an unhealthy obsession,” Manik told ANI. The situation reached a tipping point on May 18, as, after dropping their daughters off at school, Pinki sent them back home after school ended but did not return herself.
Clueless about his wife’s whereabouts, Manik filed a missing complaint at the Jatrapur police station. “I provided her with everything she ever wanted. I never suspected her of having an extra-marital affair. I blame her social media addiction for this. I just want her to come back for the sake of our children,” he added.
Locals have expressed their disbelief over the events, with a neighbour telling ANI, “It’s baffling how social media can disrupt family life to this extent.”
The local community is concerned about the broader implications of such obsessions, especially in rural areas where the influence of social media is said to be steadily growing.
Subrata Debnath, OC, Jatrapur police station, said, “As the police continue the search for Pinki, the incident has sparked a wider discussion on the need for awareness and regulation of social media usage. However, we hope better sense prevails and Pinki returns home for the sake of her young daughters.” (ANI)
