Nursing mother dies of suspected food poisoning four days after delivery

BALLARI: Close on the heels of the spate of deaths of nursing mothers, a woman who had given birth to a baby through C-section died four days later, suspectedly due to food poisoning in a hospital.

Aishwarya, a resident of Sandur, delivered at the maternity hospital in Hosapete on December 20. After delivery, she ate idlis brought from outside and her health suddenly deteriorated following which she was shifted to the government hospital in Koppal.

Aishwarya was admitted with complaints of diarrhoea and vomiting. However, she died on December 26. District Health Officer Shankar Nayak confirmed that she had died of food poisoning. Interestingly, none of the other patients at the hospitals in Hosapete or Koppal had reported any such complaints. The authorities are now investigating where the idlis were purchased from.
