Not enough police personnel were present near Maddur mosque when stone-pelting took place

Stones pelting at a Ganesha procession in Maddur on Sunday evening was captured on a mobile phone.

BENGALURU, MANDYA: Initial investigation into the lapses on the part of the police that led to the stone-pelting incident on a Ganesha idol immersion procession in Maddur on Sunday has revealed that there not enough personnel were deployed near the mosque, from there the stones were pelted, and that the police inspector was also not at the spot.

Meanwhile, five separate FIRs have been registered with regard to the stone pelting and also the protests held by Hindu groups when prohibitory orders were in force. Over 500 people have been named in the FIRs whle 22 people who have been arrested for the stone pelting, were produced before a court and remaned to judicial custody.

The FIRs against the Hindu activists, who had called for a shutdown in Maddur on Monday, mentions obstructing police from discharging their duty, snatching buntings and flags, attempting to barge int mosque under BNS sections 198(4), 121, 121(2), 190.

The high mast light was switched off before the stone-pelting.

The initial investigation also revealed that when the procession reached near the mosque around 7.30 pm, there was an azan when miscreants resorted to stone-pelting after switching off the high-mast lamp. There were also very few policemen which led to the stone-pelting.
