BENGALURU: Passengers of a electric bus belonging to the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus had a narrow escape from a major accident after its brakes failure in Nagadevanahalli and crashed into a beeda stall. This incident has raised concerns over the safety of BMTC buses.

Over 220 BMTC buses have broken down, with 156 of them being electric buses, in the past eight months. The BMTC operates over 6,400 buses, including 6,400 diesel buses and 1,560 electric buses. Despite efforts to maintain the buses, breakdowns continue to occur, raising questions about the safety of passengers.

According to statistics, 65 electric buses have broken down in the past eight months, accounting for nearly 40 per cent of all breakdowns. This has raised concerns about the reliability of electric buses.

The BMTC has been investing heavily in new buses and maintenance, but the frequent breakdowns have raised questions about the organization’s priorities. With thousands of passengers relying on BMTC buses every day, the safety concerns are mounting.

Buses plying in different parts of the city have been exposed to this danger from last April to November. But fortunately, there were only a few minor accidents that took place. The statistics are alarming, with 220 buses breaking down in just eight months. The BMTC needs to take urgent action to address the safety concerns and prevent accidents, commuters feel.
