The BMRCL has proposed a fare hike which may come into effect in three months' time.

BENGALURU: Bengaluru lifeline Namma Metro, which is used by lakhs of people every day, has proposed to increase fares soon.

Though there were plans earlier to increase fares, it was not revised over the last few years. BMRCL has now decided to ahead with fare hike and it is likely to be increased by 15 to 20 per cent.

BMRCL Chief PRO Yashavanth Chavan said an independent fare fixation committee which includes a retired judge and officials from the state and Centre has been formed to decide on the fare hike. The committee will submit its report soon and based on its recommendations, the fares will be hiked, he said.

“The committee will take into account the suggestions of citizens, the expenses being borne by BMRCL and come to a decision. The committee will have to balance between affordability for travellers and BMRCL’s sustainability, given the costs incurred”, Chavan said.

The committee has also invited suggestions from the public. Citizens can send in their suggestions by October 21 by email to ffc@bmrc.co.in. The fares are likely to be revised in three months time.
