Muslim family takes care of Hindu woman, newborn for over a month after delivery

BELAGAVI: In a show of communal harmony, a Muslim family provided care for a newborn when the mother fell unconscious after undergoing a C-section at the district hospital here. The family cared for the child for a full 40 days while the mother was in hospital.

Shama’s family was felicitated by the police.

Shantavva Nidasosi, a resident of Dandapur village in Gokak taluk had got admitted to the hospital on April 20. After she underwent a C-section, she fell unconscious due to excessive bleeding. Shama Desai, a resident of Konnur village, whose sister was lying in the next bed, decided to offer care for the mother and child and continued to look after them for six days in the hospital and later took them home where the family took care of the mother and child for about 40 days.

Shantavva said her husband is a drunkard and has two older children whom she had left with her family members. She had come alone to the hospital to deliver the child.

After Shantavva fully recovered, Shama Desai’s family handed over the newborn to Shantavva at the Market police station here and even made arrangements for the mother and child to travel to Konnur. Shantavva thanked Shama’s family profusely for taking good care of her and her newborn.
