Murder accused shot at by police after knife attack on woman sub-inspector

KALABURAGI: The police shot at a murder accused after he attacked a woman police sub-inspector in his bid to escape, near Madyal village in Aland taluk on Saturday. Both the accused and the police officer have been hospitalised.

Lakshman Poojary is an accused in the brutal murder of former gram panchayat member Vishwanath Jamadar near Khanapur in Aland taluk which occurred on September 13. The two had a running fued for 12 years over some financial dispute.

Sub-inspector Indumathi was attacked with a knife when a police team had gone to arrested Lakshman Poojary.

On Saturday, the police received specific information that Poojary was near Madyal village. When a police team reached there to arrest him, Poojary attacked Nimbarga PSI Indumathi with a knife and attempted to flee. In self defence, Afzalpur PSI Somalinga Odeyar shot thrice at Poojary’s right leg and arrested him. While Lakshman Poojary was admitted to the trauma care centre at GIMS, PSI Indumathi was admitted to Basaveshwara Hospital in Kalaburagi, Police Superintendent Addur Srinivasulu said.

According to the police, both Lakshman Poojary and Vishwanath Jamadar are history-sheeters. Poojary had hired Jamadar to eliminate one of his relatives and had promised Rs 5 lakh. Accoringly, Jamadar had carried out the task, but Poojary did not pay up. Angered by this, Jamadar had kidnapped Poojary’s relative and held him hostage. Poojary then hatched a plan to eliminate Jamadar to avoid paying him and shot him dead on September 13 when the latter was riding a two-wheeler, police said.
