HAVERI: A man and a woman of different communities were assaulted in a hotel room in Hangal town recently by a group of youths in an alleged case of moral policing. The youths belonged to the same community as the woman.
The youths approached the hotel room when the man and woman were inside on the pretext of checking the water connection. When the man replied from inside that the water connection was alright, they insisted on checking it.
As soon as the man opened the door, the youth pounced on the man and the woman, assaulted them badly and dragged them out.
The youths thrashed the woman questioning why she was wearing a burqa and in the company of a man from another community. They also assaulted the man questioning why he was with a woman from their community. The men later took the woman out of the hotel, took off her burqa and humiliated her.
On Wednesday, the Hanagal police registered a case regarding the incident and recorded the statement of the woman. They also took her to the government taluk hospital for a medical checkup. So far, the police have arrested two of the youths and are on the lookout for the other attackers.
