Minor girl, youth murdered in suspected honour killing in Bagalkot

Rajeshwari Karadi (17) and Vishwanath Nelagi (22) are the lovers, murdered for 'honor'

BAGALKOT:  A case of suspected honour killing, in which a minor girl and a 22-year-old youth were killed on October 1 in Bagalkot Rural police limits, has come to light recently. Four people have been arrested to far and the police are on the lookout for three others who are absconding.

The victims were identified as Rajeshwari Karadi (17), a resident of Bevinamatta village, and Vishwanath Nelagi (22), from Naragunda village.

The girl’s father Parasappa Karadi, brother Ravi Hullannavara (19) and her uncles Hanumanta Malnadada (22) and Birappa Dalavai (18) have been arrested for the murders.

Ravi Hullannavara, the girl’s brother, and uncles Hanumanta Malnadada and Birappa Dalavai are the accused in the case.

Rajeshwari and Vishwanath had fallen in love, but both their families refused to get them married. He was also assaulted by the girl’s family. Later on, Vishwanth’s family sent him to Kasargod for employment.

Rajeshwari’s father Parasappa Karadi instigated her brothers and uncles, and they killed Vishwanath between 3 am and 4 am on on October 1 by smashing him his private parts and chest with a rock. Meanwhile, Parasappa strangled his daughter to death.

The family of the girl convinced Vishwanath they would unite him with Rajeshwari. Trusting them he returned to the village. From there, the family, who were in two vehicles, took him to Bevinamatti village where they murdered him.

The bodies were thrown in the Krishna river from the Alamatti road bridge. The culprits took off Vishwanth’s clothes, except his inner garment, so that no one could identify him.

On October 11, the girl’s father Parasappa lodged a complaint that his daughter had been kidnapped. On the other hand, Vishwanath’s mother too had lodged a missing person’s complaint on October 3 at Naragund police station in Gadag district.

Suspecting the involvement of the family members, the Bagalkot Rural police took Ravi Hullannavara into custody on October 15. During questioning, Ravi spilled the beans and all the four accused were arrested.

The police are also looking for the bodies of the two victims.
