Metro fares to be hiked by 45 pc, BMRCL expected to make official announcement on Saturday

BENGALURU:  After the KSRTC and BMTC bus fare hike, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) board approved an increase in fares at a meeting held today at its headquarters in Shantinagar. The fare revision is being done for the first in seven years.

The new fare structure is yet to be reveleed and is likely to come into effect soon. The BMRCL, which had formed a fare fixation committee to revise Metro fares, had submitted its report, recommending a 45 per per cent hike in ticket prices. The report also suggested discounts during non-peak hours and public holidays.

The Metro fare revision committee had visited Singapore, Hong Kong and Delhi to study their metro fare systems. The committee has submitted its report, which includes suggestions for fare hikes and discounts. It’s been eight years since the last metro fare hike. The metro operating costs, interest on loan and staff salaries have increased over the years, making a fare hike necessary.

The fares may be increased, and discounts may be offered during non-peak hours and public holidays. In addition, the committee has also recommended revision of metro fares for smart cards and QR code tickets in its report.

– Discounts may be offered during non-peak hours and public holidays.
– Special discounts may be given to passengers travelling during off and peak hours (before 8 am and between 12 pm and 4 pm).

The BMRCL will officially announce the fare hike details in a press conference on Saturday. The new fares will come into effect soon.
