Medical student arrested for forcing female colleague to convert to Islam, sexual harassment

The medical student has been accused of attempting forceful conversion.

UDUPI: A 27-year-old medical student has been arrested for allegedly forcing a female colleague the convert to Islam, assaulting and sexually harassing them. The accused is Mohammed Danish Khan.

The victim and her friend, who are from Delhi and Rajasthan, and studying in Manipal College, in a complaint with the women’s police station on August 31, alleged that Danish had proposed marriage and insisted that she should convert to Islam. When she did not agree, he started threatening her, assaulting and sexually harassing her.

In the complaint, the victim said that she met Danish on the campus and befriended her and even took her phone number. On January 22 this year, during a conversation, he started abusing Hindu religion and made objectionable remarks about the Ram Mandir at Ayodhya.

On March 11, when the victim visited Danish in his room, he forced her to convert to Islam and when she refused, he slapped her, pulled her by the hair and touched her private parts. The harassment continued till August 28 on the phone, the complaint said.

Mohammed Danish Khan was arrested and produced before a court which remanded him to to 14 days in judicial custody.

Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna said he has spoken to the victim.

Reacting to the development, Udupi BJP MLA Yashpal Suvarna said, “Hindus are facing love jihad in the state and across the country. If this is not stopped, it would be difficult in the future. There are people here with who align with those in Pakistan and Bangladesh and target our women. I have met the Manipal College victim and have requested the police to take suitable action. Students coming from other states too need to be protected”.
