MANDYA: A married woman and her lover, who is also married, committed suicide within a span of a few days of each other in Maddur taluk on Wednesday. The two were in a relationship and were married separately.
Srishti (20), a resident of Yeraganahalli in Maddur taluk who hailed from Bellur, and Prasanna (25) of Bannihalli had fallen in love when they were studying in college. Three years ago, Prasanna got married to Spandana, and Srishti got married to Dinesh of Yeraganahalli about 1.5 years ago.
However, they continued their relationship. Dinesh had come to know of this and the couple often quarrelled over the issue. On December 11, Srishti walked out of her husband’s home and Dinesh had lodged a complaint with the Kestur police station.
On December 17, Srishti’s body was found in the Shimsha river near Alur Vaidyanathapura village and it is suspected that she may have ended her life by jumping into the river. On coming to know of this, Prasanna committed suicide at his house by hanging.
Interestingly, Prasanna’s wife Spandana and Srishti were classmates and both were in love with him, but Prasannna and Spandana got married. However, he continued to have a relationship with Srishti.
Police Superintendent Mallikarjun Baladandi said, “A body was found in the river 3-4 days ago along with a necklace and mangalsutra. The family identified Srishti based on her clothes and ornaments. The same day, we received information about Prasanna’s suicide. Prasanna was forcibly married to Spandana and he was unhappy. Prasanna had attempted suicide about six months ago by touching a power line and had suffered eye damage. We have registered a case of unnatural death and taken up further investigation”.
