Marked drop in SSLC pass percentage this year at 73.40 pc

The pass percentage this year dropped by almost 10 per cent.

BENGALURU: The state recorded 73.40 pass percentage in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations, the results of which were announced by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) on Thursday. This is a significant drop from last year when the pass percentage was 83.89 pc.

A total of 6,31,204 passed the examination which included 2,87,416 boys (65.90 per cent) and 3,43,788 (81.11 per cent) girls. As usual, the girls have outdone the boys. A total of 39,034 scored A+, 86,619 scored A-, 1,12,472 scored B+, 1,39,178 got B-, 1,56,487 scored C+ and 1,65,443 scored C- grades. While 3,59,703 (72.83 pc) students in urban areas passed the exam, rural students did better with 3,66,067 (74.17 pc) sailing through.

While only Ankita Basappa Konnur, a student of the Morarji Desai Residential School, Melligeri, Mudhol, managed to secure 100 pc marks, Medha P Shetty of Holy Child English High School Banashankar 1st Stage, Benglauru, Harshita D M of Sri Vasavi High School, Sira, Chinmay G K of Sri Dharmastala Manjunatheshwara English Medium High School, Belthangady, Siddhant Naikaba Gagade of Shramanratna Sri 108 Acharya Subal Sagar Proudh Vidya Mandir, Shedbal, Athani taluk, Darshan Subraya Bhat of Govt Marikamba PU College, Sirsi, Chinmayi Shreepad Hegde of Siddhivinayak High School, Goli, Sirsi, Sriram K M of Sri Sharadamba English Medium High School, Bhairumbe, Sirsi, scored 624 marks.

This year, 2,288 schools including 785 government schools, 206 aided schools and 1,297 private schools registered 100 per cent results. On the other hand, 78 schools, including three government, 13 aided and 62 private schools recorded zero per cent results.

Among the districts, Udupi was on top with a pass percentage of 94 pc, while Dakshina Kannada recorded 92. 12 pc. Both Shivamogga and Kodagu recorded 88.67 pc while Yadgir was at the bottom of the table with 50.59 pass percentage.

Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board chairperson Majushree and Primary and School Education and Literacy Department Principal Secretary Ritesh Singh said the SSLC Examination-2 will be held from June 6 to 14. “The pass percentage this year had dropped as there was less scope for copying with webcasting. Those who have failed need not worry as we are conducting two more exams. This year, the grace marks have been increased from 10 per cent to 20 per cent due to the fall in pass percentage”, they said.

The last date to apply for scanned copies of answer sheets with a fee of Rs 410 per paper is May 16. The last date to apply for recounting or revaluation, with a fee of Rs 810 per paper, is May 13, the officials said.
