CHIKKAMAGALURU: The police, along with the tahsildar, have retrieved the woman’s body from a 12-foot-deep borewell at Alagatta village in Kadur taluk. The victim’s husband had killed her and dumped her body in the borewell.

The accused Vijay had allegedly killed his 28-year-old wife Bharathi a month-and-a-half ago and buried her in their farm’s borewell without anyone’s knowledge. He then filled the well with sackcloth and sand and sealed it so that no one would suspect anything.

He had then filed a missing complaint with the police, claiming his wife was mentally unstable. The police investigation revealed that Vijay was the killer, and he had even performed a ritual to ensure the case wouldn’t be solved. Later, the police took the victim’s father-in-law into custody and interrogated him.

The ritual involved writing his wife’s name on an iron sheet with her photo and performing three animal sacrifices so that she should not become a ghost, that this case should not be known, and that the police should fail in solving the case and nailing the sheet to a tree in a temple.

The forensic team retrieved the body and took necessary samples for investigation. Vijay and Bharathi had been married for 7 years and had a 6-year-old child. The couple had a good financial background, but Vijay had allegedly demanded dowry and physically abused Bharathi several times. He had even sent her back to her parents’ house.

Bharathi’s family gave a car, bike, ring, bracelet, and chain at the time of marriage and spent Rs 15-20 lakhs on the wedding. The police have taken Vijay and his parents into custody for questioning. The investigation is ongoing.
