KOLAR: About 10 policemen, including Police Superintendent M Narayana, were injured when they went to arrest a man who had hacked his wife to death with a machete and was hiding in a house, at Nambihalli village in Srinivasapura taluk on Tuesday afternoon.
The accused Nagesh brutally attacked his wife Radhama with a machete when she was sitting in her shop in the village on Tuesday afternoon. Radhamma died on the spot while her father Muniyappa sustained grievous injuries.The gruesome crime was caught on CCTV camera. After committing the murder, Nagesh entered a house nearby and locked himself up inside to escape the wrath of the villagers who were threatening to kill him.
When the police arrived, a tense atmosphere prevailed and they tried to convince the villagers to disperse. When the villagers did not relent, the police fired a few rounds of teargas shells and rubber bullets.
After the crowd dispersed, the police surrounded the house where Nagesh was hiding and asked him to surrender repeatedly. However, Nagesh held up a LPG cylinder and threatened to blow it up.
When SP Naranaya and a few other policemen broke open the door, the accused Nagesh attacked them with a machete and attempted to flee. The police then opened several rounds of fire at him, injuring him in the hands and legs. He was later shifted to a hospital in Kolar. The injured policemen were also hospitalised.
Nagesh and Radhamma had got married 15 years ago and have a son. They had applied for divorce by mutual consent and Radhamma had sought alimony. On Tuesday, Nagesh visited Nambihalli to ask Radhamma to withdraw her petition for alimony and an argument ensued. Angered by this, Nagesh hacked his wife to death, police said. The SP has also filed a detailed report to the DG&IGP in this regard.
