Man bids Rs 5.7 lakh for holy coconut at temple fair in Jamakhandi village

BAGALKOT: A devotee bid for a coconut offered to the Malingaraya Gadduge for a record Rs 5,71,001 at Chikkalaki village in Jamakhandi taluk during the auction held as part of the temple fair on Sunday night. The highest bidder was Mahaveer of Tikota village in Vijayapura district.

Mahaveer outbid Mudukappa Patedar of Chikkalaki village and Sadashiv Mygoor of Gothe village for the coconut. The fair was held after the completion of the Shravana month and the coconut had been placed as an offering to the Malingaraya Gadduge.

The auction was held as part of the temple fair.

Mahaveer had previously won a bid for a coconut by shelling out Rs 6,50,001. During Sunday’s auction, Malingaraya Patta guru Muthya Babaladi, priest Siddanna Poojary, village elders Dundappa Babaladi, Kallappa Gidaginchi, Gram Panchayat members Basavaraj Alagur and Santosh Mamadapura were present. Thousands of devotees took part in the fair.
