TUMAKURU: The police have arrested a resident of Doddabanagere village in Sira taluk for allegedly murdering 86-year-old Putteeramma and stealing 53 grams of gold chain from her. The incident occurred when Putheramma was alone at home.
Sridhar, who is from the same village, strangulated Putteeramma with a rope, suffocated her with a towel and killed her. He then stole the 53-gram gold chain from her neck and fled the scene.
Based on a complaint filed by Putteeramma’s son Veeranna, the police arrested Sridhar near the KSRTC bus stand in Sira. During interrogation, Sridhar confessed to pawning the stolen gold chain for Rs 2 lakh at a private bank in Bagalugunte, Bengaluru, and spending the money on mobile phones, clothes, and other expenses.
The police have recovered the pawned gold chain worth Rs 6 lakh and two mobile phones from Sridhar. According to the police, Sridhar is also involved in similar cases of theft, robbery, and cheating in Madiwala and Madanayaknahalli police station areas in Bengaluru. Further investigation is under way.
Man gets life term for wife’s murder
A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the 2nd Additional District and Sessions Court in Tumakuru for murdering his wife on suspicion of infidelity.
Hanumantharayappa, the accused, was found guilty of killing his wife in June 2021. The case was investigated by the then CPI Ramakrishnaiah of the Tumakuru Rural police station, and the accused was arrested.
Public Prosecutor V A Kavitha argued the case for the state, seeking justice for the victim. The court, after considering the evidence, sentenced Hanumantharayappa to life imprisonment.
