Man accused of sexually assaulting five-year-old shot at after attack on policeman

BALLARI: The Toranagal police on Thursday shot at a 26-year-old man, accused of sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl, after he attacked a police head constable and attempted to flee. The injured accused has been admitted to the VIMS hospital.

Manjunath, a resident of Halebeedu in Kamalapura, had been accused of sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl on Monday. Police Superintendent Shobha Rani had formed three teams to arrest the culprit and Manjunath was picked up from Hulagi in Koppal district on Wednesday.

On Thursday, when the police took Manjunath for spot inspection, he allegedly attacked head constable Raghupathy and attempted to feel when Toranagal police sub-inspector Dakesh fired at Manjunath, injuring him in the right leg.

“The victim is undergoing treatment at a hospital and is said to be out of danger. Footage from CCTV show Manjunath trying to coaxing the victim before sexually assaulting her. He was also captured on camera consuming alcohol before committing the act”, the SP said.
