BELAGAVI: The Pune unit of the Maharashtra anti-terrorist squad (ATS) is learnt to have picked up two suspects for allegedly carrying out trial blasts in the Amboli forest in Maharashtra, about 70 km away from the Karnataka border.
The terror suspects are said to have travelled to the Amboli forest in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra through Nipani in Belagavi district and Sankeshwar. The ATS is learnt to have visited Nipani an Sankeshwar and collected information, but the Belagavi police did not confirm it.
Last week, the Kothrud police in Pune had arrested two people — Mohammed Imran alias Amir Abdul Hamid Khan and Mohammed Younis alias Mohammed Yakub Saki while patrolling for two-wheeler thefts. During their questioning, it came to light that they were in touch with ISIS operatives.
The Maharashtra ATS later took custody of the duo and during interrogation, it was revealed that they travelled to Amboli via Kolhapur-Nipani-Ajara. Only July 27, the ATS members visited the spot and collected information, it is learnt.
