DAVANAGERE: The Harappanahalli Assembly seat is currently held by the BJP though it faces a tough fight from the Congress in the May 10 Assembly poll. Former deputy chief minister M P Prakash’s daughters M P Latha Mallikarjun and M P Veena Mahantesh, had high hopes that Congress will give either of them a chance to contest the Assembly election, but, at the last moment, the party named N Kotresh.

Disappointed with the Congress over denial of ticket, they have decided to contest as independent candidates. The sisters have decided to file separate nominations to challenge the Congress.

The sisters are likely to campaign by invoking their late father and their brother M P Ravindra, who is a former MLA. Latha filed her nomination at the taluk office on Tuesday along with her brother in a procession with thousands of supporters.

The police resorted to mild lathi-charges to disperse large gathering during the procession.
