BENGALURU: A day ahead of Bakrid, sheep and goat rearers and sellers are raking in the moolah with different breeds selling for astounding prices at the Idgah Maidan at Chamarajpet here. At other places across the city too, sellers made brisk business.
While the native breed of goats were sold at Rs 18,000-25,000 each, a pair of Bannur sheep sold at Rs 1.2 lakh. Rams sold for anywhere between Rs 25,000-35,000 while goats sold for Rs 20,000-40,000 and a pair of short goats were selling at Rs 75,000.
Customer Khalimullah said “the sellers are demanding more money. One kg of mutton costs Rs 1000. They are demanding Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh for one sheep. Price ranges for lamb between Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000. They know, anyway we will purchase sheeps”.
Each seller had brought hundreds of sheep and goats at the Idgah Maidan. They had come from different parts of the state including, Mysuru, Ramanagara, Kolar, Bidar, Vijayapura, Tumakuru, Maddur, Chitradurga, Jamakhandi. Different breeds like the Hyderabad breed, the native breed and the Bannur breed sold for anywhere between Rs 10,000 and Rs 1 lakh, but sellers said the prices this year were lower than last year.
Farmer Anil said, “Sales are down compared to last year. There is great demand for the Amingad breed of sheep. Farmers came from districts like Haveri, Maddur, Chitradurga and others. Customers are bargaining prices of what costs Rs 40,000 for Rs 20,000. Overall, business is not going good”.
