BENGALURU: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is set to modernise its services with the Vehicle Tracking and Monitoring System (VTMS). The system will provide real-time information on bus locations, schedules and arrival times, making it easier for passengers to plan their journeys.

The VTMS will be installed in 8,800 buses, including old and new ones, and will use GPS technology to track bus movements. Passengers can access this information through a mobile app, entering the bus registration number or trip code.

The system is expected to be fully implemented by March-end, bringing convenience to commuters and improving the overall efficiency of KSRTC services. The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has already implemented VTMS in its buses.

Corporation managing director Akram Pasha told Public TV, “The VTMS will help reduce wait time for passengers and we have already called for tenders. The buses have already been geo-tagged and we will implement the VTMS fully by March this year”.

Further, elaborating on safety measures, he said the new buses are equipped with fire extinguishers and dashcams while the AC sleeper class buses have hammers to break the windows in cases of emergency. “Tenders have been called for implementing these measures in the older buses”, he added.

The KSRTC MD said the corporation has also reduced fares by 10 per cent in premium class services like Volvo, Flybus, Pallakki due to the slack period between January and March. “Since passengers movement is comparitively less during this period, we have adopted dynamic fares”, he added.
