BENGALURU: The digital payment system launched by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) last month has received an overwhelming response from the public. Following its success, the transport utility is set to introduce another innovative system, allowing passengers to pay their ticket fare using debit/credit cards.
As per the long-standing demand of KSRTC passengers, the cashless system was implemented on November 1. Currently, UPI-based tickets are being issued in 8,400 buses of KSRTC. About 70,000 passengers travel daily using UPI payment system, generating an estimated revenue of Rs 40 lakh.
KSRTC Managing Director Anbu Kumar announced that the new system, which enables passengers to swipe their cards to purchase tickets, will be launched within the next 15 days. The system will both accept credit and debit cards.
Kumar stated that discussions are under way with banks to implement this technology. The hand-held machines are ready, but the technology needs to be approved. Safety features and security checks will be ensured, he said.
This system will be beneficial for smart card users. Even if there is no cash in their account, passengers can use their credit cards to travel by bus, he pointed out.
