CHIKKODI: The Krishna river, considered the biggest in the state, has gone bone dry in several villages of Athani taluk, leaving thousands of fish dead. Farmers who had cultivated sugarcane in thousands of hectares are also dreading the worst.
Several farmers had invested lakhs to cultivate sugarcane and the crop, which is almost ready to harvest, is drying now. They are upset with district in-charge minister Satish Jarkiholi and Lok Sabha member Annasaheb Jolle for not coming to their rescue in such difficult times and remaining busy with election campaign.
Farmers also said the state should request Maharashtra to release water from its reservoirs to meet drinking needs of the district.
