KOLAR: Residents of Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) are up in arms over a Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plan to set up a waste treatment plant on 300 acres of land belonging to the Bharat Gold Mines Ltd (BGML).

Recently, the state Chief Secretary had inspected the plot and after the issue came to the attention of local leaders and citizens, there has been strong opposition to any such plan. Former MLA K Y Sampangi said, “KGF gave gold to the entire world. It is not right to dump Bengaluru’s waste here. We will not allow it at any cost”.

Sampangi organised a bike rally in protest against the proposed waste treatment plant and Dalit organisations staged a protest on Saturday. On September 2, they plan to take out a padayatra from Bethamangala to KGF to register protest.

They have demanded that the government rescind its decision and have warned of intensifying their protest if it goes ahead with the plan.
