MYSURU, BENGALURU: Kannada Development Authority (KDA) chairman Professor Purushottam Bilimale has sparked controversy with his comments about Yakshagana artists from of the coastal region.

Speaking at a book release programme organised by Prasaranga in Mysuru, Bilimale allegedly stated that most Yakshagana artists are homosexuals and that the art form has an inherent element of homosexuality. He said, “We shouldn’t hesitate to tell the truth. Yakshagana artists are on tour for six to eight months in a year and during this time, they don’t get opportunities to be with women”.

“The artists who don female roles are also under pressure, and others have a fascination with them. If a female impersonator refused to indulge in homosexual activities, the Bhagavatha (lead singer) wouldn’t give them a chance to perform the next day. They would take revenge on the stage, and the artist would be left without opportunities, which would affect their livelihood”, he said.

Bilmale further added, “Most Yakshagana artists are homosexuals and it’s an unavoidable reality in this art form. When artists go on tour, many of them don’t even have a home to return to”. The comments have sparked widespread criticism, with many taking offence to Bilimale’s sweeping statements about the Yakshagana community. His remarks have been seen as an attack on the art form and its practitioners.

Bilmale also reportedly said, “Homosexuality is a reality, and the Supreme Court has given its verdict on it decriminalising it. Novels are written about it. In Yakshagana, it’s unavoidable, and female impersonators are under more pressure. They’re attractive, aren’t they? Our first crush is often on the female impersonators”.

Later, reacting to the controversy, he said researchers and writers should bring out the struggles of Yakshagana artists without naming them. “My intention is to improve the lives of Yakshagana artists and that their problems should be discussed. But my remarks have been misinterpreted and if I have caused hurt to artists or fans, I will apologise to them and express regret”, he said.
