NEW DELHI: Heavy monsoon showers disrupted normal life across several states on Tuesday, with Gujarat’s Surat city grappling with waterlogging and school closures, parts of Maharashtra’s Nashik submerged due to an overflowing Godavari river, and rain lashing coastal Kerala.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert, warning of heavy rain in many parts of western, central, eastern, and southern India over the next few days.
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala and Karnataka during June 24 to 28; over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on June 27 and over Tamil Nadu on June 27 and 28. Very heavy rainfall is likely over interior Karnataka on June 24 and Coastal Karnataka during June 24 to 26. Strong surface winds with speeds reaching 40 to 60 kmph are very likely over Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema and Telangana during Jue 24 to 28, the IMD stated.
According to weather department, light to moderate rainfall at many or some places is likely over Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep and coastal Karnataka during 24th to 30th June. In contrast, isolated to scattered rainfall with isolated thunderstorms and lightning is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, and interior Karnataka.
In Gujarat, authorities in Surat ordered the closure of schools after incessant rains triggered severe waterlogging across various parts of the city. Roads turned into streams, and low-lying areas were submerged, severely affecting normal life.
Maharashtra also witnessed intense rainfall, with the Godavari river overflowing and inundating parts of Nashik. Residents struggled to wade through knee-deep waters as rescue teams remained on high alert.
Down south, heavy rain lashed parts of Kerala, prompting local authorities to monitor for further rainfall-related hazards.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a multi-region meteorological alert warning of intensified rainfall activity over various parts of the country and a heatwave warning for the Jammu division.

Rainfall activity is likely to increase over Northwest India from June 25, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over many parts of Central, East, and Northeast India during the next seven days. Extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over the Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat region.
As per the IMD, “Extremely heavy rainfall above 20 cm in 24 hours is likely at isolated places over Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat Region on 24th June. Very heavy rainfall is likely at some places over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat region, and isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Saurashtra and Kutch during 24th to 30th June. Light to moderate rainfall at most or many places is likely over Gujarat State, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada during this period”.
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan during June 24 to 30; over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad during June 25 to 27; and over East Uttar Pradesh during June 27 to 30. Very heavy rainfall is likely over Uttarakhand during June 24 to 27; West Rajasthan on June 27; East Rajasthan on June 24 and 27; Haryana and Punjab on Jun 25 and 26; West Uttar Pradesh on June 25 and 27; and Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on June 25.
Light to moderate rainfall at most or many places, accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph, is likely over Northwest India during June 24 to 30.
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh during June 24 to 28; over Vidarbha on Jue 24and 25; over Gangetic West Bengal during June 25 to 27; and over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on June 24, 25, 28 and 29.
Very heavy rainfall is likely over Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on June 24; Bihar on June 28; Jharkhand on June 26; and Odisha on June 25 and 26. Light to moderate rainfall at most or many places, accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph, is likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha during June 24 to 30.
Light to moderate rainfall at many or most places, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, is likely to continue over Northeast India during the next seven days, weather department added. (ANI)
