BENGALURU: Pourakarmikas in the city have alleged irregularities in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) provisional selection list for vacant posts. The Palike had invited applications for Group-D employees to fill up 3,673 vacant posts under waste management and sanitation works in different wards. About 3,243 qualified candidates have been selected by the Palike and a provisional list was released.
Now, the pourakarmikas are venting ire at the BBMP Chief Commissioner, alleging the the provisional list is not correct and that the selection process was illegal. They claimed that the civic body officials selected the candidates by taking bribes. The women workers claim that the Palike has chosen some freshers to the posts instead of posting experienced candidates.
Mutyalappa, president of the pourakarmika union said, “We are happy with the Palike’s decision to fill up vacant posts, but they did not keep their promise. They said they will select according to seniority, but they have considered seniors who were born in the 1970s. Most of the selected candidates are freshers and recommended by some influential persons. We are requesting the Chief Minister to keep his promise made during our protest that he will regularise the jobs of 25,000 workers. We will wait until Sunday, and if there is no response from the CM, around 3,000 pourakarmikas will stage a protest in front of the CM’s house”.
A senior pourakarmika, Thoumani, said, “We have been working for the past 15 years. I have to look after my children as my husband is no longer with us. When we asked them about selection, they just gave flippant answers like ‘Do whatever you want’. If I do not get a job, I will commit suicide right here. I really need the job. The BBMP has done injustice to all of us”.
