Ice cream samples sent for testing after complaints

BENGALURU: After testing idlis, watermelon, paneer, now ice creams samples have been sent for testing to check if ingredients harmful to health are being used.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) officials are checking food items every month. With the summer heat increasing, people are consuming more ice cream. Therefore, the department has raided ice cream manufacturing units and sent samples to the lab for testing after complaints about use of calcium carbonate, unbalanced sugar levels and no essence.

The health impacts of using chemicals and colours include cancer, heart disease and kidney problems. Excess use of Sunset Yellow (FCF) and Sunset Green (FD&C Green No. 3) in food and beverages can be carcinogenic; it can cause cancer.

Experts say that if chemicals colour are used in cakes, it can lead to severe health issues.
