DHARWAD: The Hubballi-Dharwad police, led by Police Commissioner N Shashikumar conducted a surprise raid on the Central Prison in Dharwad and the Hubballi sub-jail on Saturday. The raid was prompted by allegations of mobile phone usage and other illicit activities within the prison.
The raid, which lasted over half an hour, was conducted to check for any illegal activities within the prisons. The police checked the prison’s cells, canteen, and other areas, but found no contraband or suspicious items, except for some cables and ropes.
The Commissioner spoke to the jail inmates and staff regarding security measures and ensuring that no unauthorised items are kept within the prison. The Commissioner assured that the prison’s administration was taking steps to prevent such activities and that inmates found involved would face action.
The Commissioner stated that the prison was running smoothly, with no major issues reported. He said the police will continue to conduct surprise raids to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain the prison’s integrity. He also assured that any inmate who feels threatened or unsafe would be shifted to another facility.
The police chief was accompanied by DCPs Ravish, Mahaninga Nandagavi, ACP Prashant Siddanagouda and other police personnel. The Dharwad Central Prison, which is over 100 years old, houses 475 inmates and has facilities like a bakery, carpentry, and a mill.
