BENGALURU: From next month, if you are driving inside Cubbon Park, remember to keep your hands off the horn. The Horticulture Department has come up with a new rule to curb needless honking inside the lung space. If motorists honk inside the park for no reason, the traffic police will collect fines from them.
Cubbon Park is located in the heart of the city, and many people come here to enjoy the serene atmosphere and and spend some quality time. But citizens complain that the park has become noisy as drivers honk unnecessarily, which also disturbs birds and animals.
Sign boards indicating silent zones have already been put up at 16 places in the park. Motorists have been given one month’s time to comply with the rule, and if the situation does not change, the traffic police will start collecting fines.
The Horticulture Department has taken the initiation after several complaints from the public. According to Balakrishna, deputy director, Cubbon Park, ”We have organised an awareness campaign to sensitise drivers in this regard. In 2020-21, the Bengaluru Police Commissioner had issued a notification in this regard. We are conducting the drive in association with Citizen for Citizen organisation. We will do it for a month on trial basis. We have no authority to impose fines on anybody. After one month, we will execute the new rule with the help of the traffic police”.
