MANDYA: A homing pigeon, reared by a Mandya youth, travelled 1,790 km from Delhi in 52 days to reach its breeder. In the process, the one-year-old bird named Abhimanyu, has set a record for being the youngest to complete the race in its first ever attempt.
The Karnataka Homing Pigeon Federation had organised the Delhi to South India race on April 5 and a total of 22 pigeons from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu took part. The pigeon Abhimanya, reared by Sridhar of VC Farm, reached Mandya on May 28.
According to the organisers, 14 of the 22 pigeons have reached their destinations. All the birds had rings tagged to the legs before the start of the competition in order to help identify them.
