VIJAYAPURA: A history-sheeter, identified as Yunus Aklak Patel (35), died after he was shot in a shootout with the police in near Rampur village in Sindagi taluk in the wee hours on Saturday.
Yunus Patel was a notorious history-sheeter with multiple cases against him, including murder and attempted murder. He had robbed a person of Rs 25,000 and a scooter at Gandhi Chowk in Vijayapura on Friday and a case was registered at the Gandhi Chowk police station.
Based on specific information, that he was heading towards his native village Devagaon in Alamela taluk, a police team intercepted him near Sindagi. When the police tried to arrest him, Patel attempted to attack them with a knife. In the process, two police constables and Sindagi police inspector Pradeep Talakeri sustained injuries.
The police inspector then fired a warning shot, but Patel continued to attack, causing the officer to fall down. In self-defence, the officer shot Patel in the leg. He was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police Superintendent Lakshman Nimbaragi told media persons on Saturday that Yunus Patel had 12 cases registered against him, including two murder cases and one attempted murder case. The incident is being investigated, and further details are awaited.
